Travel comfortably to the Danube region in Upper Austria. By train, bus, car, boat or plane.
Once you have arrived, you will certainly want to experience something. Of course, the most beautiful way to explore our region is by hiking along the Donausteig trail or by bike or e-bike the Danube Upper Austria cycling region. But also regional bus or train connections allow sustainable mobility on site.
Those who come to the Danube region without an own bike, can rent one at the bike rental points in the region or, in many cases, also at their own accommodation.
Arrival
An overview of how to reach the main transport hubs in our region.
Arrival to Passau
- Very good train connections to Passau main station (from Munich airport about 160 km, about 2.5 hours).
- Passau has highway access from Munich, Regensburg, Salzburg and Vienna.
Arrival to Linz
- Long-distance and short-distance traffic at Linz Central station
- Freeway access from Salzburg/Vienna (A1, A7), Prague/Freistadt (A7), Regensburg/Passau (A8, A1, A7 or toll-free on the Danube: B 127)
- Linz Airport approx. 20 minutes to the city center
- Connection to Flixbus and long-distance bus lines
Arrival to Schärding
- Arrival by train to Schärding train station
- Freeway connections: A8 Innkreisautobahn, from Germany via A3 and B 512
- Linz airport (approx. 1 hour), Munich airport (approx. 2 hours), Salzburg airport (approx. 1.5 hours)
Arrival to Amstetten
- Freeway connections: A1 (from Vienna, Salzburg)
- 10-15 minutes walk from Amstetten train station to the city center

Long-distance connections
Use the train as a convenient means of travel to your Danube vacation, for example from Munich, Hamburg, Berlin, Stuttgart, Frankfurt or Prague. Rail travelers choose the arrival stations Passau, Schärding, Linz or Amstetten. Some hosts also pick up their guests from the train stations upon request.

Bicycle transport
In many European countries, bicycles can be carried on trains approved for this purpose. An international bicycle ticket is required to take bicycles on board.
Tip: Register and reserve bicycles in advance with the railroad - there are only limited capacities!
Einfach-Raus-Ticket
With the Einfach-Raus-Ticket of the ÖBB (group ticket for 2-5 persons) many possibilities are open. If you want to take your bike with you, the Einfach-Raus-Radticket also offers an interesting solution, www.oebb.at.
Bus
Long-distance connections
Buses run regularly from neighboring countries, especially to Linz. The company Flixbus includes Linz and therefore Upper Austria in its route network.

Of course, there is also a comprehensive regional bus network of the OÖVV (Oberösterreichischer Verkehrsverbund), which covers the entire region.

Ferries
Mobile on the water
Conquer both banks of the Danube during a bike tour along the Danube Cycle Path or a hike along the Danube Trail – with the Danube ferries you can easily switch to the other side of the Danube.
The ferries are just right for exploring both north and south banks of the Danube. Of course, you can take your bicycles on the ferries!
Tip: With the DONAU.Erlebnis Card, the use of the ferries is free from two nights in a partner establishment! Ask in your accommodation!
Car
Many roads lead to the Danube
If you are coming from Vienna, take the A1 freeway (Vienna - Linz).
If you are coming by car from the direction of Munich or Regensburg, use the A1 (Salzburg - Linz) or A8 (Passau - Schärding - Linz) freeways.
You can travel toll-free if you choose the Danube embankment roads from Passau, which, in addition to saving on tolls, also offer the view of more scenery!
If you are coming from the direction of Prague, use the D4 and E49 or Route 4 to Passau and the D3 and E55 to Linz.

Bike rental
With the rental bike through the Danube region
Arrive comfortably with light luggage and rent a bike or e-bike on site. In the region's extensive cycling network, you can actually take a vacation from your car and take advantage of the perfectly developed cycling infrastructure.

Travel with all-round service
If you want to travel to the Upper Austrian Danube region by bus, train or bike and want to save yourself the trouble of lugging your baggage, there is an uncomplicated luggage service from suitcase butler or ÖBB.
Suitcase butler
Luggage service for trips to the Danube region. Upon personal request, the suitcase butler will also bring your luggage from hotel to hotel. Ideal for multi-day cycling tours along the Inn and Danube cycle paths or for long-distance hikes along the Donausteig.

With ÖBB's door-to-door luggage service, pick up your bike or luggage from home and have it transported to your vacation destination. Luggage can be shipped door-to-door in Austria, South Tyrol, Germany (mainland as well as the islands of Usedom and Rügen) and Switzerland.
Flight
Linz Airport is about 15 kilometers from Linz city center. Airport bus No. 601 connects Linz city center with the airport. Trains also run hourly from Linz and Wels to Hörsching station.
